Time is the fairest judge of artistic excellence, bearing witness to the flourishing of enduring classics. The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s long-established commissioning programme serves not only as a powerful engine driving the creativity, but also as a vital initiative enriching the field of Chinese music at large, capturing the voice of our time while laying a strong foundation for the future.
The “Classics: Splendid Sonorities” brings back timeless masterpieces that mark the development of Chinese music in Hong Kong and on the global stage. Over the years, numerous commissioned works premiered by the orchestra have travelled far beyond Hong Kong, becoming landmarks in the evolution of contemporary Chinese music.
Conductor Sun Peng, laureate of the 2011 inaugural International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music and Best Interpretation of Works of Hong Kong, leads the orchestra on a journey retracing those milestones as these works take on renewed vitality today.
Featured soloist Zhang Hongyan, internationally acclaimed pipa virtuoso and professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, brings her masterful technique and profound artistic cultivation to bear, rendering time-honoured classics with even greater depth, colour and technical brilliance.
As notes intertwine, epics endure. We cordially invite you to enter this temple of art built by time and talent to witness the glorious journey of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and Chinese cultural development over the past 50 years.
