Remark
“Masters Legacy Series”advocated by Kenny Koo

The title “Commander Hu” evokes images of battle flags under a strong leader—in reality, it is the revered nickname for the late master virtuoso Liu Mingyuan. In the history of Chinese bowed string instruments, Liu wielded prowess over a wide range of huqins—banhu, erhu, zhonghu, gaohu, and jinghu—hence his honorific title. His performances combined the bold, forthright spirit of northern China with humanistic nuance and warmth, profoundly expressing life.

This “Commander Hu” concert, jointly presented by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Music Association, pays tribute to this artistic giant. Several leading huqin virtuosos tracing their lineage from Liu—Shen Cheng, Li Baoshun, Huo Yong-gang, Ma Dong Yan, Ngai Kwun Wa and Zhang Chongxue—join in the celebration, bringing their profound artistry to recreate the technical brilliance and creative spirit of their mentor.

Through the playing of huqins, master and disciples are united in spirit. We cordially invite you to join this grand gathering of the crème de la crème, savouring the artistic temperament of a legendary master as the interplay of bows and strings bears witness to the continuous, ever-vital legacy of Chinese music.
